Thank you for this beautiful journey we were on together. Thank you Sininauhasäätiö and the wonderful customers we met and had the privilege to get to know to even if it was just a little bit. Thank you for having us and keeping an open mind towards our project.

Show no mercy

It seems to me that we are living in a tough world. Values have changed. Our society, this welfare state that we live in was built upon the belief that we must all take responsibility for each other. The poor are as good as the rich. In order to build the best possible country we must make sure that we have the maximum number of citizens who are healthy and capable of working. This is what people believed after the wars when Finland slowly started to find its path as a modern welfare state.

“Kovat arvot palasivat Suomeen. Yhä useampi suomalainen uskoo siihen, että talouskasvu on hyvinvoinnin jatkumisen edellytys.” (Tough values made a comeback in Finland. More and more people believe that in order to maintain wellbeing the economy must grow.) (IS 13.4.2010)

Let it flow

For my last blog entry, I decided to talk about the power of music in making a change. Music can really make a difference in influencing people and their way of thinking. It is also a therapeutic way to deal with your emotions. You don’t need the same language to be able to feel the music you are listening to. For me, music has always brought me closer to people and helped me to deal with painful emotions.

Are you Left outside?

Kuusamo / Picture by Katja Mattila

Have you ever felt like an outsider? Like you don’t belong into the society? Like there’s no place for you and you don’t know what you should do with your life. Maybe you could try to move somewhere else to get a job or a place to study in. Maybe it doesn’t work out no matter how hard you try and you get depressed and stop trying after a while. What happens then?

Social exclusion – a problem too big to solve?

I read an article on Helsingin Sanomat about social exclusion. The article presents the risks, different aspects concerning the problem and suggested that something has to be done to prevent further problems.

“There are about 10000 families in Finland whose children have a high risk of social exclusion. There are several factors concerning poverty, the parents’ mental health and low education level that put a load on their everyday life.” (HS 5.6.2019)

MY FIRST STEPS

As you may have noticed from our groups previous blog posts, we are doing a project work for Sininauhasäätiö (www.sininauhasaatio.fi). On this post I’m trying to share my thoughts and feelings on how my first steps felt working with their respectable foundation.

ONE STEP AT A TIME.

“Every step is a new start.” These are lyrics of the song we made together with our customers from Askel kerrallaan when I was doing my first job placement there this spring. That sentence is a good way describing how deeply I got to know the people who took that one step and walked in ready to start again. But first let’s go back to the start…

This is no isle of bliss

“The police is investigating a stabbing that took place at a Sininauhasäätiö facility for the homeless” (HS 13.7.2019)

“A big police operation in Töölö at Sininauhasäätiö facility for the homeless” (HS 14.11.2018)

“Drug abusing Sininauhasäätiö inhabitants cause trouble at Töölö library” (HS 18.7.2018)

The news are happy to tell what I think. Violence, crimes, drugs, bad behavior and big trouble. This is what I think when I hear the word Sininauhasäätiö. Our project with Sininauhasäätiö (a Finnish organization that works against homelessness) arises mixed feelings in me. I have a 15 year history in working at a second hand store located right next to Sininauhasäätiö unit in Vallila. During these years I met dozens of Sininauhasäätiö customers. Most encounters were neutral and I most likely met a huge bunch of their customers without realizing where they were coming from. But I also met so many people that threatened to kill me that I lost count. As the faces became familiar I learned to predict which people were bound to cause trouble.
