Promoting inclusion

What does inclusion mean?

Inclusion is seen as universal right. The aim of inclusion is to embrace all people irrespective of race, gender, disability, medical or other need. Social inclusion promotes wellbeing and reduces exclusion and inequality. Inclusion and equality are cornerstones of a sustainable society and fundamental rights that belong to all.

According to the migrant Health and Wellbeing study( Maamu), one fifth people of Russian, Kurdish or Somali origin have encountered name calling or verbal abuse in everyday situations. Reading this, did not shock me at all but i felt disappointed. I think its everyone’s responsibility to make refugees welcome in to our society. Integration doest happen whit out the help of Finnish people. We need to promote a safe and a non discriminatory environment and a feeling that you can trust other people and the authorities.

In Finland we have lots of organisation that work to help immigrants integrate. I went true some of these webpages that should help immigrant and one of the best ones was infoFinnland.fi, i really felt it had lots of very good information. There is also te-palvelut.fi, they offer immigrants integration training. Then there is also the Finnish immigration service that are responsible for providing quota refugees with initial orientation.

  1. Thank you for your post Sharon!
Whilst the results of the study are disappointing and concerning, it sheds light to the ugly reality of our society and raises awareness on the topic of racism and discriminative attitudes. This is greatly important, especially considering that a lot of people are ignorant and blind up to this day towards this topic, to an extent where they claim that racism and exclusion is not much of an issue anymore.
