Dreaming of the perfect night in a national park after our project with Honkalintu

Our project in cooperation with the company Honkalintu which is located in the Nuuksio national park is coming to an end. During the project a survey was conducted to find out what activities people like to experience in a national park in order to develop product packages for our client. The survey also included a question about how visitors like to spend a special night in a national park. The open question was answered with great variety.

We students are taking this as an opportunity to dream up a perfect night in the national park despite the current circumstances of the world. In the following paragraphs, you will be able to read the dreams of the project team students: Zahra El Fellah, Jasmin Probst, Sonja Leppänen, Arete Niinemets, Alexandru Focseneanu and Tiia Nuutinen.

Zahra: “The perfect night at the national park would include also the perfect day. I would go with my family and do activities that were free from timetable and where I could discover the nature calmly. I am interested of a lot of things: plants, trees, rocks, birds, animals and bugs. As simple as hiking would be great option for that! A many hours’ hiking I would like to eat self-made grill food by the bonfire and enjoy the smell of the smoke. After a long day it would be nice to spend the night in a simple tent and hope there are no wolfs nearby. I like to start my day early in the morning and the perfect start for the next day would be Early bird experience. What is even better than watching the sunrise in a fresh morning while eating delicious breakfast sandwiches and hearing birds singing?”

Jasmin: “I actually experienced the perfect night in a national park here during my semester abroad in Finland. During a trip to Lapland in March, the other exchange students and I explored the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park during the day. After a lovely hike, we spent the night in a glass igloo nearby. Like the other visitors, we waited for the Aurora Borealis. And in fact, we were very lucky that night when the sky lit up in green and purple colours for us. This perfect night in the national park will forever be a highlight of my semester abroad in Finland!”

Sonja: “The perfect way to spend a night in a national park for me would be full of things to do with my friends that I might not otherwise be able to experience so easily. It would be great to start the day with some activity, maybe a kayaking trip or hiking, after which we could go swimming and try the tentsauna. In the evening we could prepare the food ourselves by the campfire, and we could spend the night in a Tentsile. The trip would be crowned by the “Early bird” experience, where we would wake up early and go watch the sunrise and listen to the birds singing.”

Arete: “In my opinion, when I am really hiking in a national park, the best way to stay a night is a campfire tent (“laavu”) or a hammock, because a normal tent can be heavy to carry and a small one may be uncomfortable. But when I am going to have calm trip, for example a short hike or other nice activity, I would like to sleep in a Tentsile, a glassiglu or a rafthotel, because I would like to experience something different.”

Alexandru: “My perfect night in a national park would be with my friends. After a day full of various activities such as skiing, hiking, swimming, kayaking, I would go with my friends in the woods to a campfire to make a barbecue. Then we would all go to the tent. I would spend the night admiring the northern lights with them, playing cards and telling jokes, then we would go to sleep in an igloo or a tent. The next day we all woke up early to see the sunrise and listen to the birds chirping.”

Tiia: “My perfect night in a national park would be with my family and friends. Hiking during the day at your own peace on a route you choose yourself and having lunch by the campfire. A tent sauna would be a new and nice experience, especially when combined with swimming. The rest of the evening could be spent by the campfire chatting with friends and roast marshmallows. Sleeping in a hammock for the night or test Tentsile would be interesting. In the morning it is wonderful to wake up at the same time with the awakening nature and enjoy the silence.”
