Modern-day slavery

Human trafficking is a global problem. Every country in the world is affected by it, whether as a country of origin, transit, or destination and it is for a range of exploitative purposes, not just sexual exploitation. (United Nations 2020)

Gender Equality: Violence Against Women

Gender equality, according to the European Institute for Gender Equality (2020) means equal rights, opportunities and responsibilities for men and women. So the human rights, opportunities and responsibilities should be the same, whether they’re born male or female. Gender equality, and empowering all women and girls, is one of United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. It’s part of their 2030 Agenda, a plan of action for sustainable development. It’s an important goal, because in addition to being a fundamental human right gender equality is necessary for a peaceful, wealthy and sustainable world (Gender equality 2020). The United Nations (UN) have multiple individual targets to achieving gender equality. In this blog post I will be concentrating on their target to eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation.

No justice, no peace

The goal number 16 of sustainable development is peace, justice and strong institution:

‘’Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals is dedicated to the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, the provision of access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable institutions at all levels.’’ ( 2018, 1)

PEACE means living free, without having to worry for your life or about war. Being able to be yourself without fear.

JUSTICE is righteousness. It means that we all should have the same rights no matter religion, race, sex, sexual orientation et.

INSTITUTION is a social structure, which influences people’s behavior. Strong institution is righteous and peaceful.

Clean water and sanitation

In this blog my goal is to open up the subject clean water and sanitation in our world. I have chosen this topic because it is extremely important to all of us and something, we should all be entitled to, no matter where in the world we live. While substantial progress has been made in increasing access to clean drinking water and sanitation, unfortunately billions of people, mostly in rural areas, still lack these basic services. Worldwide, one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water, two out of five people do not have a basic hand-washing facility with soap and water, and more than 673 million people still practice open defecation.

Recycling Crisis – Global Issue

The world´s largest consumer of discarded plastics, China passed legislation banning almost all waste imports. In 2017 many western countries sent most of their plastic waste to China and Hong Kong. Now, that there is no option to do so, more countries and municipalities are burning or landfilling plastic and creating a serious global warming risk. Finding a solution to place or dispose tons of waste will require both diplomatic and legal action as well as efforts to prevent the untenable increase in plastic waste generation. (Collins 2019). It is now really important to start thinking about sustainable recycling methods locally. It is no longer possible to take waste elsewhere for others to take care of.

Coronavirus Reminds Us The Pandora’s Box Has Never Closed

Major progress has been made in improving the health of millions of people. Maternal and child mortality rates have been reduced, life expectancy continues to increase globally, and the fight against some infectious diseases has made steady progress. https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/ENGLISH_Why_it_Matters_Goal_3_Health.pdf

These progress gave us confidence. But in the 21st century, the Corona19 reminds us that the “Pandora’s Box” has kept open.

Healthy Lives and Levels of Well-Being

In the developed west it may seem as though we are drowning in talk of well-being. Of course, no one should be faulted for wanting to ‘be well’. Indeed, the drive to feel secure, safe, loved, respected, and self-actualized, is what makes us human in the first place. In the west we have more or less progressed to tick the first two boxes of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Most of us are physiologically okay, and we have a level of safety and security that our ancestors could never have dreamed of.
