Everyone’s favorite free time activity – eFootball project

Gaming and esports are rapidly growing markets all over the globe. This autumn our project team had an awesome opportunity to study a very unique topic. Forget the boring and usual marketing development projects and jump right into the world of gaming.

Esports, also known as electronic sports, is a sport in form of virtual reality and video games. In esports individual players or teams compete against each other in video games. These professional players usually have organizations behind them, and they participate in different tournaments and events. The most popular video game genres are multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), first-person shooter (FPS), real-time strategy (RTS), card, fighting and battle royale games. Esports developed during 2000s-2010s and it is still a rapidly growing market.

In this project our main area was the eFootball FIFA video game series and Rocket League video game. FIFA video game is a football simulation game and Rocket League is a vehicular football game. Both these games are more or less the most popular ones of their genres. FIFA has its roots all the way back in 1993 when they released their first game “FIFA international soccer” and they have held their ground as the number one sports game through out the years. Rocket League on the other hand is a much younger video game. The game was first released in July 2015, but it quickly gained a wide fan base around the game and it is one of the most followed video games around the world.

Our main goal for this project was to develop and generate ideas for an esports related website and mobile application. The website should include elements that are visual, yet easy to use and that serve all the target customers. The best-case scenario would be that it would be functional as a website and at the same time as a mobile application. The website/application would be linked to other applications and platforms, such as discord, twitch, Facebook and Instagram and it could utilize the single sign-on (SSO) system where the user needs to only sign-on once to the system and then be able to use all the services with the same account.

The project team started by studying some general information about esports as a market and basics of the FIFA and Rocket League video games.  We also did some research about esports organizations and their websites and made a conclusion that it is hard to make the website simple, yet visual. If the website is too visual and complicated, it does not serve for example the older generations and if the website is way too simple it does not drive visitors to the website, or they won’t spend too much time in there.

After searching some information about search engine optimization (SEO), website designing and content marketing, we figured out with the partner that the website could utilize the SSO system. It would allow the simple system between the different platforms and applications and therefore the website could be made more visual without making it too complicated. The team started to study the SSO system and found out that it is very useful for the website.

The project is coming to its end and all there is left to do is to summarize the key findings related to the website and make a plan for executing the idea. It has been a very interesting autumn and we all look forward to new challenges in the future.
