What it’s like to work on an international team – SB-project

Our project team consists of four nationalities: Finnish, Ukrainian, Mexican, and Tajikistani. It has been eye-opening to work with many different cultures and backgrounds. In this project we have been learning about digital marketing and in addition, helping a Finnish entrepreneur to take her business global.

Communicating everything in English has been good practice. In today’s job market it is a valued skill for an employee.  This project isn’t an English class, so it is not about perfect English grammar but the courage to use the language.

The international project is also an excellent opportunity to connect with people in different countries. Especially if you are considering working abroad. Or even when traveling to some other countries, it is nice to know people there.

The team has not had any major issues due to internationality. Teamwork has been good, and the team has had fun together. It has been interesting to learn more about teammates’ cultures and moreover share information about own country.

Here are more teammates thoughts about what it’s like to work on an international team:

“I think working on international teams is interesting, we come from different working cultures and to find a way to bring them together is interesting. It’s nice to get to know different people from across the world.”

“I think it is refreshing to meet people from different cultures. And I think these projects are a fun ways to learn to speak and write in English more fluently. When the team has people from different backgrounds it often enables the team to think in different ways when doing the tasks regarding the project.”

“The most initial insights for me are the level of involving and future benefits. For instance, in the international project, we are not listeners, who don’t want to be forced into participating. We are not learners as well. We don’t sit with a pen in our hands and make notes. Herein we are workers. We are working out and build our skills.”

“Different cultures boost each other, everybody works in a different way and as an outcome, we have colourful and yet very talented working group. International project is a great opportunity for everyone to improve their English and learn about other cultures, at the same time when learning all what comes within the project. I’d say this has been interesting project with interesting people, ambitious people.”

In conclusion, there are many positive reasons to participate in an international project. Just be opened minded and be ready to challenge your English skills!
