The autumn semester and projects are nearing their final stages, and the holiday season is just around the corner. Laurea University of Applied Sciences launched an international collaboration project with Höyry ja Lämpö Oy, lasting throughout the autumn semester. The project team consisted of five members, one of whom is an exchange student from Spain. The purpose of our project was to research EPS waste recycling and its logistics in Finland and across Europe.
Lue lisää: Market Exploration for Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Recycling – Service Design and Sustainability ProjectWe began the project by familiarizing ourselves with the topic and analyzing competitors’ recycling methods. We focused particularly on companies that utilize expanded polystyrene (EPS), especially in fish/styrofoam packaging. We explored the public recycling programs available in various European countries and delved into new recycling technologies and innovations.
After gaining an understanding of the general situation, we focused on identifying the movement of EPS waste across Europe. Our aim was to pinpoint the main sources of EPS and regions with the highest production of EPS waste. We also investigated the industries with the greatest demand for recycled EPS waste and sought to map the quantities of EPS waste produced in different areas. Additionally, we studied the methods companies use to dispose of EPS. The picture below shows the machines of Höyry ja Lämpö Oy, which they use to produce compressed EPS.
Our final goal is to identify and reach potential risk investors. The purpose of the investment is to provide our client with the opportunity to enhance their EPS recycling processes. This phase is currently underway. We are committed to completing the project successfully. Overall, implementation of the project has been both enjoyable and highly educational. We hope that our client will gain valuable tools and insights for their future.
